Taleban in Kunduz near 'surrender'

A key Northern Alliance commander has told the BBC that the Taleban have broadly agreed to surrender in the besieged northern town of Kunduz, as the US continues to bombard Taleban front lines in and around the town.

General Abdul Rashid Dustam said he had spoken by telephone to the Taleban commander in the city, Mullah Dadullah, who has allegedly agreed to meet later on Monday to finalise the terms of the surrender.

Northern Alliance forces near Kunduz have agreed to Mullah Dadullah's demands that his troops be allowed safe passage out of the town in exchange for an end to hostilities, according to General Dustam.

But he said the alliance would never allow safe passage for the foreigners in the town who have been fighting for the Taleban, as has also been demanded by Mullah Dadullah.

It is thought that this is now the key stumbling block to any agreement between the two sides.
