The US Navy 5th Fleet has mounted a picket of all ships leaving Pakistan’s territorial waters to cut off a marine escape route for terror suspect Osama bin Laden.
Washington gave notice to commercial shipping through its Maritime Liaison Office (Marlo) in Bahrain, shortly after the operation commenced Monday.
“The US is using all available military assets to capture Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda associates. As part of this search operation, US and Coalition forces are currently querying commercial vessels in the region, particularly those operating off the Pakistani coast,” a Marlo advisory issued at 1500 GMT said.
The advisory warned master mariners that any attempt to resist boarding of their vessels would entail severe repercussions.
“Anyone suspected of assisting or transporting Bin Laden and/or Al-Qaeda leadership should expect to be boarded, and will risk the sinking or seizure of vessel, and will be detained and jailed,” it said, adding: “Any perceived hostility towards a US or Coalition naval unit during these ongoing operations will result in the destruction of the commercial vessel.”
The warnings were accompanied by the reiteration that anyone turning over Bin Laden to the US would earn a $25 million bounty.
