Free shipping does not sound like a way to make money coming from a company that is, at this point, mainly a shipping company.

My opinion is shipping should never be free. It is a very important expense in doing business. There have been numerous studies that people abandon their shopping carts when they see how much shipping costs. I suspect the studies to be accurate but the cause and effect can be altered. The online customer has to be sold on the advantage of selection and convenience. Convenience more than anything. This should be a major theme in marketing one's products. I only see a few firms driving this point home. I have learned a lot lately from Penney on-line site which is doing very well. They never offer free shipping but every page one is on has some hint that this will be delivered right to your door. The theme is not constantly price.
