I don't consider those to be mutually exclusive.

Manson is very much like OBL (or vice versa) in that they manipulated others to commit atrocities for their cause. Manson's goal was to start a race war, OBL's was to start a religious war. Neither one had the courage to put themselves in harms way WRT to the specific heinous acts. You can attribute this decision to being smart enough to avoid the dangerous situation. If there was no danger to themselves in committing the acts that they are now famous for, I have no doubt that they would have been right there with the other terrorists/murderers.

They had a plan, it was dangerous, they sent somebody else to do the dangerous stuff. That sounds like a definite reluctance to face danger to me. And considering that it is a situation that they manufactured, I think it falls within the definition.

I think that I have another analogy along the lines of a schoolyard situation.

One boy taunts another with fighting words, the other boy responds with a willingness to mix it up at the end of the school day, instead of showing up to fight, the boy who initiated the taunts brings his big brother to fight his fight. This would be a cowardly act in my book. Let me know if you need me to draw the parallels.
