Top aide of bin Laden detained

ISLAMABAD, Nov. 20 (Kyodo) _ A top aide of Osama bin Laden, the prime suspect in the Sept. 11 suicide attacks on the United States, was detained in Peshawar in Pakistan's northwest near the Afghan border on Monday, a Pakistani daily reported Tuesday.

Fazle Raziq, the detainee, ''was traveling on sabotage mission, which entailed action against American military targets in Kuwait,'' the Frontier Post said, quoting unnamed sources.

The suspect was quizzed by ''a joint interrogation team, which comprises both civil and military officials,'' it added.

An unnamed analyst told the Peshawar-based newspaper: ''Without doubt, Raziq is a prize quarry. This may very well be the beginning of the end for bin Laden.''

The daily did not, however, provide any further information.

US to send additional troops to Kuwait

WASHINGTON [MENL] -- The United States is sending ground forces to Kuwait amid renewed tension with Iraq.

Officials said about 2,000 soldiers are on their way to the sheikdom. They are expected to complete deployment by the end of the week.

The forces will be equipped with M1A1 tanks, artillery and infantry fighting vehicles, officials said. They said the troops will participate in a military exercise in Kuwait and replace existing forces in the sheikdom.

The troops are arriving from the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas and other units. Officials said the deployment is meant to deter any Iraqi military action.
