By the way, you are right that the Bible does not prohibit polygamy (it does prohibit polyandry, I believe). However, the rabbis took this text as meaning that monogamy was to be preferred, and it eventually became the norm: Genesis 2:24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.
