I can think of a lot of much better and less intrusive ways for the government to deal with illegal immigration than a national i.d. card.

One doesn't start with i.d.'ing 250 million of us and imposing burdens on all of us to deal with a teensy minority, even if it did help (which it won't). The loss of freedom and privacy is significant, and any gain hasn't been shown.

How , specifically, would 9.11 have been lessened with national i.d. cards? If you can point to one thing, please answer the next question: Knowing that, what steps would the terrorists have changed about their plan in order to get around it?

Let's not get into the mode of thinking that if we give up some rights and privacy it will automatically translate into more safety. It won't. Ben Franklin said so.

Safety versus Freedom
"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

--Benjamin Franklin
