It has always been position of all US administrations that settlements are illegal and is an obstacle to piece...The reasoning of the Israeli gvn's (even left-wing/pragmatic like Barak) aside for security reasons that settlements are sort of like offer on a house, conditional. If not accepted in timely manner, it is void..Sort of like the longer Intifada/stalement would continue, the more there is for Palestinians to lose...Sue for piece now. Again if Palestinians were abandon terror, Inbternational Opinion, US primarily would have force Israel to accomodate their aspirations long ago
