That is EXACTLY what they said about the Social Security Number.

I remember that well. Huge debate. I remember building data bases that created a unique identification number other than the SSN as it's official key and the SSN as it's unofficial key. Over time, restrictions on the use of SSN eroded. They eroded through a combination of benign neglect perceived need. Over time, many uses were authorized by Congress. And despite all the worries expressed in that huge debate, Uncle Sam is not currently tracking the purchase of Playboy. No more nor less so than with a secure ID card. The worst thing that has happened is that it's much harder now to cheat on our income taxes. Just as the permissible uses of the SSN have been expanded as needed, so might the uses of the national ID. You may recall the stink when people were checking into movies rented by Clarence Thomas. I can't believe that the slippery slope will ever legitimize such intrusions.
