Good commentary. On the move to support Palestinian statehood: although that may be related to terrorism, I think it was the tacit premise of American policy for awhile, and that it would have been articulated sooner or later. Even Yitzhak Shamir proposed virtual statehood when he was premier (what one might call "autonomy plus"), pre- Oslo. The status of the settlements was to be negotiated last, and the Palestinian Authority was to have some restrictions on its armed forces and foreign policy, but every other attribute of statehood would have been conceded. Clearly, post- Oslo, statehood (or "statehood minus") was the goal. The United States just left it up to the parties. Now, there is some impatience to get it over with, and a hope that the Arafat will have additional incentive to negotiate in good faith under present circumstances. In any event, the PLO will still get far less than they aimed at through terror.........
