One point to consider, patents (put simply) tell a story of a problem in the prior technology, or art. Another analogy of a patent is that it is a method, or process, about how to "get" from point A to point B. Of course, there are infinite ways from point A to point B and a patent can cover some and, at times, most, but rarely all ways.

It will be interesting to see how this turns out. Most company's utilize their patent portfolios to force others to cross license, etc.

Perhaps there is a patent that Broadcom wants? Perhaps Broadcom wants Intel to pay royalties? Who knows...

This will take years to resolve.
