Here's the email I sent on November 8, 2001:

>>When I contributed to the September 11 Fund, it was with the assurance that 100% of the money would go directly to the victims, not organizational overhead. Now I see that significant sums are being donated to various organizational expenses like Legal Aid, cell phones, moving expenses, office repairs.

With all due respect, that is not what I call "directly to the victims."

I think this is wrong, morally as well as legally.<<

Here is the one I just sent:

>>This is the second email I have sent you on this topic.

I donated money to the September 11 fund during the celebrity fund-raiser because the United Way promised that 100% of the money would go to the victims of the September 11 attack.

I usually donate to the Salvation Army, but this persuaded me to donate to the United Way instead.

Now I read that some of the money is being given to a dance troup, and the Brooklyn Philharmonic! These organizations are not victims of the attack any more than you are or I am. We all are suffering from the economic effects of the attack but we all are not victims. We all feel pain, but we all are not victims.

Victims are people who were directly affected by the attack, people in the immediate zone of the attack and their families. You cannot give money to people and organizations who were not directly affected.

What you are doing is wrong, morally and legally wrong.<<
