Well, one possible reason is that they are fishing for someone big (and with deep pockets) to come in and buy a big chunk of them. This would help the company in some ways, i.e. making it much easier for them to get loans and ensuring their survival. At first glance it seems that it would be good for us little fish too, but I've seen it work the other way also. For instance, if the new big player doesn't care what the stock price is over the short term and their ultimate goal is to take the company private, it can be bad. If someone acquires over 50% of the stock then we will have very little say over what happens to the company.
