In the United States, real life and social change take place outside the party conventions. Take Las Vegas, for instance, a city that is constantly growing and piling up casinos and 3,000-room hotels. With its state subsidies and deregulation (no taxes but plenty of special effects), its mafia and military bases, high rollers and big tippers, Las Vegas lives, sells and entertains round the clock. And when the city decides to reinvent itself, blowing up old hotels provides yet another tourist attraction.
