I finally bought a book that states the reasons behind the verses in the Qur’an. The book is in Arabic, and the author is “Abi AlHasan Ali Bin Ahmad AlWahdi AlNisabori”

Here is what it states about the verses starting 2:190

These verses were revealed to the Prophet (pbuh) for the Hudaibeiah treaty/arrangement. The Prophet and his companions tried to go to Makkah for Umra (which is similar to the pilgrimage to Makkah, with the difference that it can be at any time/date). But the non-believers turned them away and didn’t let them. Then the non-believers offered the Hudaibeiah treaty/arrangement that they would let the Prophet and his companions come for Umra the following year and that they (the non-believers) would evacuate Makkah for three days so that the Prophet and his companions can pray and do the Umra. The Prophet accepted the arrangement. The following year, the Prophet prepared to go to Makkah as per the arrangement he had with the non-believers, however his companions feared that the non-believers would turn them away again like what happened the previous year, and even fight them in a prohibited month for fighting which the Prophet’s companion did not want to do (fighting is prohibited in certain months in Islam). That is when the verses were revealed to the Prophet pbuh to fight the non-believers (which is self defense if he has to) and to even fight the non-believers if they fight them at the sacred mosque.
