I personally believe that there is a market for "vertically" integrated uP, albeit small.
The Media Gx processor was quite innovative for its time and, I believe, it took Paul Engel by surprise. Now, for the first time, an upstart had created an entirely new market, leapfrogging Intel. Unfortunately, the Media Gx was not an equivalent for a Pentium MMx, K6, or even Pentium. it was just too slow. I/O, Video, Audio, and other features were integrated into 3 chips, and this processor caused PC prices to decline to the sub 1000 level, for a (ahem) "state of the art" processor.
I have no idea about the graphics market, but this idea failed. It could have been any number of reasons, but AMD may want to consider this, instead of competing with Intel head to head. |
