Thanks for the compliments. However, as an Intel shareholder, I hope AMD stays around.
I believe that the IA-64 platform is a huge risk for Intel. They will be going into a new market where Intel isn't as "protected" as before, like x86.
To compete in this new marketplace, Intel must have a strategy simliar to (ahem) AMD. They must be able to show that their architecture is a cheaper solution, while not affecting performance. If this new architecture is successful, it will cause the likes of Sun, IBM, etc., to make a difficult decision, i.e. whether to continue to design their own solutions or buy Intel. If they choose to buy Intel, they (IBM, SUN, etc) face the risk of commoditizing their boxes. However, on the other side, development costs will be reduced, while manufacturing/CGS will rise.... |
