<< It is the business of the schools to ensure a basic level of achievement regardless of the fecklessness of parents. They cannot go much beyond that without parental cooperation or massive resources allowing them more opportunity to compensate for the defects in the home environment. >>

Neocon, I think you are spot on. I couldn't agree more.

I also think those of us who are parents should take a good hard look at ourselves and how we raise our children, and point the blame where it belongs. And frankly, I think much of the problem has to do with the failings of parents.

It is far too easy to point fingers, far more difficult to stand up and take responsibility for your failures. But productive just the same, IMHO.

Related to the failings of parents is a culture that reflects our changing values. Our heroes are athletes and movie stars. The news shows consistently report the gross receipts from the latest movies. The general message to kids now appears to be that the object of life is to acquire as much as you can, and amass fun fun fun. How much emphasis is put on books and intellectual pursuits? On artistic pursuits? Can our children name a hero who comes from intellectual or artistic fields? Can our children name even one Nobel laureate from the last 10 years? Can we?? When we go home at night, do we read, or watch TV? For diversion, do we engage in intellectual or cultural pursuits, or do we chase the almighty FUN and watch movies?

Just some food for thought....
