Dropping the bomb saved lives, very likely on both sides

Totally true, Neocon. The militarist government of Japan, operating under the slogan of "A 100 million to die with honor," was planning for for the mass suicide of the entire populace, taking with them as many Americans as possible. When you are dealing with a nation gone insane, your options are quite limited, and with two A-bombs available, it would have been irresponsible of the American government not to use them. Truman was perfectly aware of the moral arguments that would ensue, and it could be said that he was highly courageous in taking responsibility for that decision.
