Since when does the US sell T-72s and AK-47, as well as SA-6 anti-aircraft missiles?

The Iranians, at least, were using some remaining US made equipment sold to the Shah, and logistically supplied through Israel (remember Iran-Contra?).

Btw, my BA was in Poli Sci, specifically International Affairs and National Security Policy, with focus upon the Middle East and Latin America.

And I was taught the essentials of political risk analysis by one of the foremost sino-soviet specialists who used to be the director of the Asia Office of INR at State. A person who Kissinger consulted with about sino-soviet relations after he left State and went to work for Rand.

What should be drawn from this conversation is that US foreign policy doesn't operate in a vacuum, and is often reactive to events which were not of our making.
