I'm not a military person myself but I've always found military strategy fascinating so the article appealed to me.

I agree with you, there was no choice. One cannot allow the terror of September 11th to go unanswered. Something had to be done and if it hurts the likes of people like Gore Vidal then we should have to worry about that in more peaceful times.

None of this is unprecedented. George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Franklin Delano Roosevelt acted unilaterally with heavy hands against what would today be the equivalent of terrorists. I doubt people were sensitive about those issues at the time. People who believe the US should exercise more restraint don't understand that with restraint it can get a lot worse. We exercised restraint after the USS Cole was bombed. For that we were rewarded with the World Trade Center.

These people, the militant Muslims, think that exercising restraint is weakness. Sooner or later you turn the other cheek one too many times and you realize that the only way to stop getting punched is to punch back harder.
