Morning Crocodile.
I had forgotten I close my eyes when I center my clay :)
Yesterday I managed to have almost the full day to myself so in a whim, I checked out my clay(closet 3,000# still in the garage here. Still moist after about 3 years. SO I dusted off my wheel and spun about 200# of clay.
Much to my surprise, I turned out about 30 large vases ranging from 10"-14". Forms are nopt too bad at all! Only blunder was the last one, perhaps I was just getting tired, it ended up being a saladbowl :)
Got the whole project done in about 7 hours. Than crashed real hard. Only waking about 10 minutes ago from about a 10 hour slumber. Hopefully will trim them today.
My upper arms and shoulders are feeling the pains of wedging so much clay after very long sabbatical.
I figure if I can maintain some form of schedule/inspiration, I could be ready to do a glaze firing by mid/late January.
I'll have to make all new glazes as well, but that is where good note keeping comes in handy. I also still have all the chemicals so it's just a matter of getting down to business.
After that I will have to contend with my "dragon". It has is't own personalities and well, we have been apart for so long, I'm not sure how such a firing will result. As I think I mentioned I only do reduction firings with is so there are going to be some serious prayers offered up to the almighty kiln gods.
Only bad thing that happened yesterday was while I was hunting back for the good clay, a chunk of about 60# of rock hard clay(which my daughter had been playing with) fell about 2' right on my right foot and big toe. At the time, the enthusiasm of the event brushed it off. However; today the pain is being felt in double time. Back is a little sore too as I don't have my wedging table here at the home studio and was wedging on the ground on a half busted piece of plaster.
But all in all, I am pleased with the results. Unfortunately, the reality of the event is that these were suppose to be lidded vases, but my enthusiasm for spinning large overshadowed the need to piddle around making lids. Maybe next batch.
Raining here today and cooling off(yesterday was 62ish) right now, so perhaps I will get my butt into gear before too long and plow into it yet again.
Thanks. |
