To All, Upset weekend in college football. Only one question remains: why should there be a BCS Playoff? Miami is the only undefeated team with a real schedule. I doubt Virginia Tech will be any problem for them this year. Oh, yeah, I remember why there is a playoff: money. <g>
So, since somebody has to play the straight man to Miami's championship, is there any team among the real candidates who have a shot? Texas or Colorado? No way. Though Colorado would have the better chance because if they go crazy the way they did against Nebraska, they could stay in the game. Illinois? Good team, but nope, not against the Canes. Tennessee? They could perhaps keep the score a bit more respectable than the Seattle Slug-a-beds did. But if Kentucky can shred their defense with passes, Miami will eat their lunch. Oregon? Another good team, but they belong in a game against Illinois just like in the good old days before the Rose Bowl took its 30 silver coins from the BCS. LSU? They didn't look so hot against Florida. Or Mississippi. Or Tennessee. Or even Kentucky. Auburn? Nuh, uh.
Brigham Young? Gimme a break. Play some winning teams. Division I winning teams.
So, the most dreaded thing in the world looks like the only hope: Miami vs. Florida. I hate the idea of two teams from the same state. But at least the Gators can stay with Miami and make it a game worth watching. But they still have two tough games to go. They have to first beat Tenn., then either LSU or Auburn. The first is much tougher than the second, unless they pull an Oklahoma and decide the result should be snail-mailed in.
There are two other ways to go that will never happen. The first is to put Arkansas in the title game, as those guys aren't bright enough to know they can't win. Or, put in Stanford, as they are to Miami what a 150 IQ is to a room temperature IQ. They may be able to humiliate the Canes by bringing up their lack of gray matter. Unlikely, but worth a shot. Too bad the Canes are not 50% on parole, as they were for many years. Then we could run in the tag football intramural team from The John Jay School of Justice. <g>
It's been an interesting season and a very interesting rivalry week. Now comes the absolutely ridiculous mega-conference playoff games. The regular season counts for nearly nothing if you have more than 11 teams in your league. <g> |
