Friedman makes the point a couple of times that this "honest debate" can't start while Osama is still around. The point he doesn't make is that Osama's death will trigger the debate. Or that something else will trigger the debate. I don't know what will get that debate going. It's hard for a people to become introspective and look to make changes. And you don't usually do that as a response to losing one of your own at the hand of the "others." I can't imagine the ME states doing that anymore than I can imagine us having an "honest debate" on root causes.
