I can't help but relate this to the bully in the school yard or in the workplace.

I spent some time researching bullies, specifically "serial bullies," as I was looking into the question of cowardice. I was struck by the similarity to Osama and I think your point is well taken except that this bully has so many henchmen and fellow travelers that I don't see the necessary vacuum developing to trigger the debate even if he makes his exit quietly. A culture of victimhood, once inculcated, is hard to shake off. That culture in the ME is too long ingrained and well fed. Tough to turn that around.
