An update on my recent attempts to get Linux running on one of my PC's.

Today I installed Mandrake Linux 7.0, but was not able to configure my dial up modem. The two versions of Linux I have now tried both are unable to detect things like IP addresses or HTTP protocals on their own, they need the installer to obtain this information and edit the operating system to use the correct data in the correct fashion.

If you are not able to do this you are not able to set up an internet connection. The average consumer is NOT going to be able to do this.

I'm reformating my hard drive again and will now attempt to install Red Hat Linux. If I can't get it to work I will probably BUY one of the very recent versions (mine are 1 year old) and will hope that the new Linux that is available will be able to set up my modem itself, without a great deal of programming assistance.

If the latest versions of Linux are not capable of this simple task then Linux is not ready for use on the PC by anyone but IT pros or the extreme hobbiest.

IMO,
Dave
