Hi Unc,

yet the kind of battlefield gentleness towards civilians depicted in this story has been the SF way for the 40 years i have been around them. it would have been much easier, less time-consuming, and much less risky to kill the drivers quietly and quickly. or even easier...to quietly and unseen just stand back, lase the target and let the birds attack with no warning and no regard to who was around the target area. the real payoffs from operating the way they did here come late

I really appreciated your comments regarding the air war article pointing out the care taken to limit civilian casualties. I am really pained and disappointed by the large number of posters on this thread who have no firsthand knowledge (through a brother, father, friend, or acquaintance) of the sense of personal honor of US military officers. I find no other institution in this country in which words mean things to such a wide degree. If we were not able to depend on each other's word, things would spiral down pretty quickly.

If you are told not to expend Class V except on verifiable military targets, you do just that and bring those thousand pounders the 800 miles back to the ship...it makes me happy in that the depots and contractors ain't turnin' out this stuff near as fast as we are usin' it....nothin' wrong with conservation...

So, we have a SOC battalion (-) of Marines on the ground near Kandahar as of a few hours ago..no doubt after the S-2s picked the brains of the SF operatives who have been there for several weeks now. No time for heroics...we remember Mogadishu and the bad dreams the Rangers and their helos had at the hands of $12 RPGs! If we can believe what is reported, Gen Franks has let your people on the ground practice their craft without hovering over them...Let us pray that Marines are also afforded some time to get the lay of the land before some intermediary starts asking for 15 min sitreps...

Will be an interesting few weeks....Unc...Pray for our troops...........jj
