If that is the case, then what injury has been offered to Islam?

I would say that the "injury" has less to do with any conflict between Islam and Christianity than with north/south issues and the continuing resentments of those who were once colonized toward their former colonizers. The decolonization process left a great deal of hostility toward the west in the developing world; in the 1970s this hostility tended to coalesce in the form of socialist-linked rebellions. Now we see it resurfacing in the form of Islamic fundamentalism. Islam is simply a binding factor for resentments that have nothing to do with religion. The issues are complex, and many of the common interpretations on both sides are simplistic to the point of silliness, but there are real grievances.
