U.S. Recruiting Russian Mercenaries for Afghan War

[ The U.S. is offering veterans of the former Soviet Union's war in Afghanistan up to $5,000 per month to fight the Taliban, according to a report last week by the Pakistani News Service.

Recent Russian TV news reports have featured several accounts from soldiers who fought the Mujahideen in the 1980s, with at least one saying "he would soon be going to that country again to fight the Afghans, but this time on the side of the Americans," PNS claimed.

The veteran boasted that he had extensive experience fighting on the difficult Afghan terrain and said he would return as soon as he signed a contract with the U.S.

While U.S. diplomats in Pakistan have denied the reports, the U.S. Embassy in Moscow has refused comment, PNS said.

One Russian TV clip featured a security guard at the U.S. Embassy saying he was tired of inquiries from hundreds of Russians about the recruitment center. "They are drawn by promises of huge wages, and there have been visitors not only from Moscow but also from Tula, Rezan and Pskov," the guard reportedly said.

U.S. Ambassador to Russia Alexander Vershbow, as well as Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov, told PNS reporters based in Moscow they were unaware of any U.S. recruitment drive, with Ivanov noting that such an effort would be against Russian law.

But military observers in Pakistan are said to believe the Kremlin may have quietly approved the mercenary recruitment as part of the new era of cooperation between Washington and Moscow. ]
