Compaq rarely disappoints, and the Compaq Presario 8000Z is no exception. This system is just the thing
for multimedia enthusiasts and businesspeople. And the price is perfect for both, making it a clear Editors'
Choice. It uses great technology, such as the 1.53-GHz Athlon XP 1800+ processor, nVidia GeForce3 Ti
500 video controller, and 80GB hard drive. We especially like the inclusion of a CD-ROM drive to
complement the DVD-R/RW drive—perfect for transferring data among various forms of media.

We are very pleased with the quality of the 19-inch flat-screen CRT monitor (18 viewable inches)
capable of displaying 1,600-by-1,200 resolution. The 8000Z also includes a built-in microphone and two
JBL speakers, which can clip to either side of the monitor. You may want to leave the speakers in the
box, though, because the 8000Z comes equipped with a solid Klipsch 4.1 speaker system. Add that to
the Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! card and you have a melodic combination.

Multimedia enthusiasts will appreciate that the 8000Z (along with the Gateway 700C) has the most ports
of any machines in this roundup. The three IEEE 1394 ports (one up front and two in back) and six USB
ports (two up front) make connecting to digital cameras and scanners a snap.

The 8000Z's chassis design can accommodate three front-accessible drives, including the floppy disk
drive, in a tower configuration. The 8000Z landed in the top half of our After Hours tests, which include
the Quake 111 Arena Demo001 and Unreal Tournament tests.
