My saying is "I will admit defeat to no machine." It's how I got into the geeking racket to begin with. Fighting and overcoming problems on my own machine, which was initially just bought as a toy.

When I was working as a contract programmer, I occasionally did PC support for end users if the regular support person was absent or had encountered something outside his experience.

Supporting end-user PC's was always the most fun I had in the field, but it also would've paid the least if that were my job title. Programming, especially when it's your umpteenth accounting or inventory management system from scratch, is nothing but tedium. It's a strong mental workout, but it eventually gets REAL old.

I've always enjoyed little programming projects I've done specifically for myself, though. They're always something new. And I learn in the process. If I'm not learning, I'm not having much fun.

Kinda like my former ("illustrious"?) career as the sheriff around here. Every user I encountered was different and needed different motivations to "stay the course", so every new person I met was a learning experience.
