Fatah squad tried to assassinate Sharon

The Fatah Al Aksa Brigade vowed it would
continue its attempts to target Prime Minister
Ariel Sharon despite a failed attempt by cell
members recently to ambush Sharon at his home
in the Old City's Moslem Quarter.

A leaflet issued this morning in Ramallah
confirmed that members of its organization had
been involved in a recent attempt on Sharon's
life, Israel Radio reported.

A five-member squad staked out the area around
Sharon's home near the Damascus Gate in the
Old City, waiting for an opportunity to ambush
the prime minister during a rare visit to the
apartment.

One of the terrorist lived next door to Sharon's
home in the Moslem Quarter and allegedly
attempted to recruit east Jerusalem residents to
join the group.

Security forces uncovered the group before it
was able to carry out the assassination.

Three of the five cell members were caught by
Israeli security officials and are awaiting trial.

The organization said it would continue trying to
kill Sharon.

In another close escape, IDF Chief of General
Staff Lt.-Gen. Shaul Mofaz came away
unscathed when a bomb exploded near the first
jeep of a convoy he was riding in near Beit Hagai
in the Hebron Hills last night.
