MoD poised to announce British casualties

[Note from pb. My symathies to all the brave soldiers concerned]

The Ministry of Defence is expected to announce that British troops have been injured in Afghanistan.

Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon told MPs that details would be given in due course.

No details of the numbers involved, or the nature of their injuries, were released.

The injured soldiers are thought to have been returned to the UK for treatment.

Conservative defence spokesman Bernard Jenkin expressed his sympathies to any British casualties.

Mr Hoon told MPs that "a very small number" of British armed forces members had been wounded in the course of operations in Afghanistan alongside US forces.

Five American soldiers were injured, three of them seriously, in the battle with Taliban prisoners near Mazar-e-Sharif.

The soldiers were hurt when a bomb from an US plane fell too close to their position and the seriously injured were evacuated to receive medical attention.
