Urgent: U.S. Economy Enters Recession: Official

WASHINGTON, Nov 26, 2001 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The National Bureau of Economic
Research (NBER), the arbiter of U.S. business cycle, announced Monday that the
United States entered a recession in March, ending a ten-year expansion.

NBER's dating committee, composed of academic economists from Harvard, Stanford
and other prestigious universities, posted its decision on its Web site.

It ruled that the long expansion ended in March and the nation's 10th recession
since the end of World War II began at the same time.

The U.S. economy declined 0.4 percent in the third quarter of this year and most
economists are projecting a deeper contraction in the current quarter.
