Ridge: Sen. Leahy's Anthrax Claim Not Backed by Science
Monday Nov. 26, 2001; 9:59 a.m. EST

Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy jumped the gun when he claimed on national TV Sunday that an anthrax-laden letter addressed to him had enough of the lethal bacteria to kill 100,000 people, said Homeland Security Czar Tom Ridge on Monday.

"I read that and I heard that," Ridge told radioman Don Imus. "I talked to the folks at the FBI today and they haven't opened it.... I'm not sure that we've got the scientific evidence that can corroborate that at this point."

Ridge said the FBI is "going to anticipate" that Leahy's letter contains lethal levels of anthrax but has yet to make any kind of determination as to how many people could have been killed by its contents.

For nearly a week the Vermont Democrat has been issuing melodramatic statements about the anthrax letter, which was intercepted by the Senate post office before it got anywhere near him.

Yesterday Leahy told NBC's "Meet the Press,"

"I was the subject of at least an internal terrorist thing when somebody sent me an anthrax letter that could have killed over 100,000 people.... We still haven't gotten the letter opened. It is so powerful that they are having difficulty to figure out how best to open it and preserve the evidence."
