NTT DoCoMo Recalls Handsets on Glitch
NOVEMBER 26, 2001 TOKYO (AP) -- Japan's top mobile phone company, NTT DoCoMo Inc., is recalling handsets used for third-generation mobile services after detecting a software glitch in about 1,500 of them.
DoCoMo also said Monday it has suspended sales of the FOMA N2002 model until Saturday.
It wasn't immediately apparent how many handsets had been distributed. The company didn't say, but the phones been on sale for a week.
The product, which is manufactured by NEC Corp., freezes when a user tries to access a small number of Web sites with certain design specifications, DoCoMo said. The FOMA N2002 is the latest 3G handset model.
When the handset freezes, various data -- such as saved e-mail, Java-based content, call records and other settings -- will be lost, DoCoMo added. Owners of the defective handsets will be able to replace them with new units.
The problem came just a week after DoCoMo had launched its video clip distribution service, called ``i-motion,'' as part of the new 3G service lineup.
FOMA N2002 is the only handset model that can accommodate the ``i-motion'' service, which enables users to obtain video content at top speeds that are about six times faster than those of other domestic cellular operators.
DoCoMo's competitor, KDDI Corp., the nation's second largest carrier, also earlier announced its intention to provide a similar video clip distribution service starting in December.
DoCoMo said other functions, including voice communications, telephone directory and other saved data such as ring melody and screen saver, aren't affected by the glitch.
DoCoMo shares ended up 6.6 percent at 1.77 million yen ($14,267) Monday. |
