re: how about mot, ibm and soitec in soi? Don't tell me that intel beats those.
two things: first, soitec only produces soi wafers and motorola uses a lot of ibm's technology. the only company that exists that is pushing their own unique implementation is ibm - not motorola, not amd, and certainly not soitec. and that brings me to me second point: does this make ibm a leader in ibm technology? by definition, it does. does this make them a leader in manufacturing? some may argue that it does here, too. does this make them "the" leader in manufacturing? now that's pretty much up to dispute, imo. Intel has shown plenty of manufacturing prowess, and their technologies make it to high volume much faster than ibm's. Intel was first in the industry to start manufacturing .13u cpus, and already they have showcased new bbul packaging techniques, high-k dialectric, fully-depleted soi, and epitaxial dopant layer technologies for the terahertz transistor, and next week they will be discussing their 90nm manufacturing process, which will be available in 2003, but not before high volume 300mm wafer production. i'd say Intel is "the" leader in manufacturing, even more than ibm, and certainly more than motorola or soitec.
