Several of the airlines receiving substantial amounts actually posted a profit for the quarter that included September. Southwest is an example.

What is the rationale for giving money to Southwest?

What is the rationale for giving money to any airline that can "afford" the ego gratification of buying naming rights to a sports arena.

The fact is, airlines have one of the most effective lobbies in congress and capitalized on a tragic situation.

Airlines severely curtail operations as a result of strikes and weather. Sept 11 was a blow to the carriers but it should not have been fatal -- or required free money.

Northwest dumped about 20 percent of their flight attendants. As these people were not represented by a union at the time, most of the people let go were most senior and highest paid. I don't think these people got much relief from the bailout.
