They were a minority at that time. Widespread respect for learning (as against religiously enforced reverence or barbaric disdain) only came when learning itself was more than the preserve of a very few... if Aquinas shone then, how much brighter could he have been 200 years later, in Italy? or 400 years later, in Britain?

I like history the more as it becomes more ancient - but I try not to glamorise it, or the prevailing attitudes.
