Hi Alan,
<< We were very close to stopping the strikes on the taliban during this encounter. >>
Man, if this was true, I was certainly completely unaware of it. All the talk I was hearing everywhere from Bush on down was, "We're in this for the duration until we win." I sensed a great deal of resolve everywhere. And I think the administration did a good job in preparing America psychologically for a long, concerted effort..... but then again, 9/11 really did a far better job.
For myself, I have always believed (and still do) that massive bombing will take place, will do relatively little militarily and strategically speaking, but that we have quite a fight on our hands looking forward at least a decade. After I saw the reaction to 9/11, I became convinced that we would win eventually, because of the sense of resolve and determination on the part of Americans.... an unbelievable force that the world has never really seen the full power of, but when fully mobilized, completely unparalleled. But the Taliban are only the warmup, the most easily located and targeted enemy. Now comes the hard work.
JMVHO, of course.......
