11/26 21:23 TSMC Says Capacity Use Is Increasing for Most Advanced Chips By Alan Patterson quote.bloomberg.com Taipei, Nov. 27 (Bloomberg) -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the largest maker of chips for other companies, said use of production capacity that fetches the highest profit margins is rising as customers place more orders. ``The trend is for our utilization rate to improve in the more advanced technologies,'' TSMC spokeswoman Guo Shan-Shan said in an interview. Chairman Morris Chang predicted in October that 80 percent of TSMC's production lines using so-called 0.18 micron and higher technology would be in use in the fourth quarter, Guo said. TSMC can cut more chips from a silicon wafer with its most advanced technology thereby helping customers cut costs. TSMC yesterday raised its pretax profit forecast for the full year by more than half on a surge in orders that investors said was linked to sales of Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox video-game console. The company is required by Taiwan stock exchange regulations to give a more detailed report on profit expectations within 10 days. About 60 percent of TSMC's factory capacity is idle as analysts predict the chip industry will shrink by about a third this year to about $130 billion.
