Churches and state become unified during traditional eulogy. It is custom. Leaders like Presidents are expected to memorialize sad national events such as these. Ex Pres. Clinton was particularly effective in this.

If you notice, the coin of the realm has "In God we trust" on one side and "e Plurubus unum" on the other. In our history much thought was given for the meaning of these terms by past patriots.

The great example is biblical, perhaps: Matthew 22:21 (also repeated in Mark and Luke) when the "right wing" religionists of that time attempted to trip up Christ putting the question to him in public forum whether it was lawful to give tribute unto Caesar? His response was "Shew me the tribute money." After this was done, he said: "Whose is this image and superscription?" And they answered, "Caeser's." His reply was: "Render therefore unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's." If he had answered "no" he would have broken Roman law. If he had answered, "yes" he would have broken Hebrew law. The separation remained intact.

Body and spirit come together during horrible tragedies when the bereaved are too struck to carry on. Thousands of widows, widowers, mothers and fathers cannot. At a time of such sorrow it is a function which the leader of the nation must perform.

That governors, presidents, heads of state or generals mention God does not worry me at all in our society.
