Force Computers Upgrades Flexor System 1, System 2 Embedded Servers to Gigahertz Performance

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 26, 2001--

1U, 2U Rack-Mount Systems Now Available with 1GHz Pentium III
Processors -- Fastest On Intel's Embedded Roadmap,

DC Power Supplies Also Offered as an Option
Force Computers, a Solectron company (NYSE:SLR) and a leader in embedded computing, today announced a performance upgrade to its Flexor(TM) System 1 and System 2 embedded servers with availability now including 1GHz Pentium(R) III processors -- the fastest on Intel's embedded roadmap -- as an option. These 1U- and 2U-high systems offer cutting-edge performance for network application requirements in high-density rack-mounts. For OEMs designing solutions for e-commerce vendors, telecommunications providers and others using servers for Web hosts, firewalls, virtual private networks (VPNs) and other Internet functionality, System 1 or System 2 gigahertz-rated servers can be implemented with up to 42 or 21 units in a 19-inch, 6-foot rack, respectively. Designed to meet space-constrained environment requirements, System 1 and System 2 provide two of the smallest form-factor solutions available at this performance level as well as offer DC power supply unit (PSU) options.

A Range of Configuration Options

Based on PICMG PCI/ISA passive backplane technology, System 1 and System 2 offer a range of configuration options. Single and dual 1GHz Pentium III processor-based single board computers (SBCs) are available on both System 1 and System 2 units. Other SBC options on the servers include:

-- System 1

-- 566 and 733MHz Celeron(R) processor; 600, 850 and 866MHz Pentium III processor; and dual 866MHz Pentium III processors

-- System 2

-- 733MHz Celeron processor; 850 and 866MHz Pentium

III processor; and dual 866MHz Pentium III

processors

All SBCs include graphics, serial, parallel, USB and Ethernet interfaces -- and select SBCs feature SCSI interfaces.

"With the 1GHz Pentium III upgrade, Systems 1 and 2 offer a complete line of solutions from those for high-end network applications like Web caches to scaleable ones for digital imaging," said Michael Beauchemin, Force product manager. "Compared to off-the-shelf products from big vendors who mostly focus on the desktop and limit choice of memory, processor and more, Force products meet exact OEM needs -- from exclusive branding to custom engineering -- since we'll work with OEMs out of our global footprint of design centers, all backed by Solectron's ISO 9001 certified manufacturing strength."

Power Plays, Slot Selection

System 1 offers a standard 200W AC PSU, and System 2 has a standard 385W AC PSU with an option for dual redundancy. These systems also offer a choice of 48V DC PSUs. And system integration meets price/performance needs via many option slots:

-- System 1

-- three slots comprising half-length 32-bit PCI

slot, half-length ISA slot (if second Ethernet

interface not required) and optional full-length

64-bit PCI slot

-- System 2

-- five slots in all with three full-length 64-bit

PCI slots, one half-length 32-bit PCI slot and one

shared full-length PCI/ISA slot

Both offer DVD/floppy, CD/floppy and internal drive options. From this menu, OEMs can flexibly specify a system for virtually any network application. And 64-bit PCI slots enable configurations to meet I/O-intensive requirements like Gigabit Ethernet.

The Flexor PICMG PCI/ISA Family

Based on PICMG PCI/ISA standard passive backplane technology, the Flexor line provides a range of processors, backplanes and enclosures that combine to create platforms to match OEM requirements. PICMG passive backplane technology offers advantages of low-cost peripherals and I/O cards from the PC market but with flexibility and reliability standard PCs can't match. Combined with Force's commitment to quality and longevity, Flexor products offer optimum industrial/embedded computing solutions.

Availability and Pricing

System 1 and System 2 embedded servers are now available in volume. Prices start at $1,550 for System 1 and $1,999 for System 2. All monetary amounts are stated in U.S. dollars.
