Well, Karen, as long as you understand that you're also an imaginary friend, since although I communicate with you I have never and almost certainly never will meet you in person.

And of course there's X's imaginary husband. She thinks he exists, but you couldn't prove it by me. Or probably by you.

In that context, I agree that the term "imaginary friend" is appropriate to identify people who are real to some, but not to others.

And indeed, I'm quite as sure that I don't want to share my imaginary friend with X as I am sure she doesn't want to share her imaginary husband with me.
