I've discovered that some people or crowds liberally tease each other as a gesture of affection whereas with others that just isn't done.

As you might have gathered, I'm definitely from the former crowd. Like you, I developed a very thick skin from childhood teasing (which IMO is not usually so 'friendly', however). Possibly because of that I find myself at home in groups which must be (to an outsider) unusually rude to each other - but it's friendly and funny, IMO, and it feels odd if we're not at liberty with our own tongues... of course, if we see a chance we're also rude to ourselves, if only to pre-empt others <g>
