Hi blandbutmarvellous; A lot of the actions of the Taliban are explicable as violence for the purpose of keeping the population afraid and under control rather than an attempt to achieve a pure Islamic state. I'd love to hear Kaplan's comments on the Taliban and its relation to Islam and the Afghan population, though now it's probably obvious to all.
