It was spelled that way in the 2nd article you posted as well.

Can a news agency really be considered legitimate if they spell names incorrectly?
I'm sure somewhere they have found documents that prove that everyone else has the spelling incorrect. <g>
They should at least make some sort of mention about it in the article. Otherwise they cause morons like myself to get all confused and embarrassed of the way we've been spelling his name...

I still have issues as to whether or not it's proper to Capitalize the "b" in bin Laden. For instance... do you capitalize it if you are omitting his first name? bin Laden, or Bin Laden, or why not just Laden and pretend bin is his middle name?
Besides, it looks very silly not using a capital letter at the beginning of a sentence... <g>
