<<To be sure, unless Islam undergoes some changes to accommodate modern reality, we will always have religious wars of sorts, in much the same way as there were Christian Crusades in centuries past.

As Salman Rushdie (of Satanic Verses fame) had pointed out, the present war is a war between the West and Islam despite the West's declaration that it is only a war against Islamic terrorists. >>

Perhaps, but of the bulk of Islam, but of Moslems I've known, the largest percentage were as removed from fundemental Islam as am I from those ancient Christians who carried out the Crusades of long ago. I though have found that sort of backward attitude from Arab & African Moslems. The 3rd generation Turkish-American gal I met wore only a beret & refused pork & (most & or strong)alcoholic beverages as symbols of her Islamic faith. A friend from here for technical school from southern India(whose father was part of the Indian government) would drink beer(only & only on a hot day or for a health problem) & would eat pork only when it was the sole meat offering at a party(pig roast)Of "modern", heck, he's a VERY sharp BS EET.
