<When I had zero material goods as a child, I was perfectly able to and did experience the world's wondrous variety and enjoyed my place in it. I always have. The amount of wealth is almost irrelevant to that process. I could see and understand everything and explored all sorts of connections and avenues. >

Exactly... What is quality of life??? IMO it's happiness, and it's practically a truth that material wealth does not create or augment this. I no longer work for this reason, I have what I need and am enjoying being a "Mr. Mom" & watching the kids grow up [OK, and playing some golf and stuff]. To a certain extent my experience has been that a good portion of 'personal' technology [sorry, including cell phone] can reduce the ability to live in [enjoying] the moment and therefore decreases the quality of life. TV is the obvious example... watching rather than doing as well as clowding the head with information.

I spent my childhood in the backwoods of Ontario and went into business on Wall Street accumulating more wealth than I ever envisioned. I quite to be with the kids and don't work anymore, even though there are always more toys to buy... I've had enough to know it's no big deal. To be honest I still do pretty much the same stuff and other than my fast car and some internet time don't think I'm much better off because of technology. I just think it's overrated.
