Sumitomo Mitsui Bank May Sell Goldman Sachs Shares
Wednesday, November 28, 2001

NEW YORK (Nikkei)--Two of Goldman Sachs Group Inc.'s largest shareholders, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp. (8318) and Kamehameha Activities Association, may sell all of their 14.1 million shares in the U.S. brokerage, according to a registration statement filed Tuesday by Goldman Sachs with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Sumitomo Mitsui currently owns 8.67 million Goldman Sachs shares through a derivatives subsidiary. Market capitalization was worth 792 million dollars at Monday's closing price.

In 1986, the former Sumitomo Bank invested 500 million dollars in Goldman Sachs, but sold part of its shareholdings when the U.S. firm went public in 1999. The bank continued selling shares to raise funds to cover losses from disposal of bad loans.
